Why Brazilians Pay in Installments: The Culture of 10x and 12x “Sem Juros”

Why Brazilians Pay in Installments: The Culture of 10x and 12x “Sem Juros”

Money, shopping, and everyday life in Brazil

In Brazil, an expensive product is often introduced as a monthly payment before it is understood as a total price

A phone may cost R$6,000, but the advertisement emphasizes 12x de R$500 sem juros. A refrigerator, dental treatment, airline ticket, course, pair of shoes, or auto repair may also be divided across future credit-card statements.

This does not mean every installment is the same kind of debt. A purchase divided by the store, an issuer-financed purchase, an unpaid statement, and a traditional carnê are different mechanisms.

A major part of card spending by value

How common are installment payments in Brazil?

Installments do not dominate every transaction, but they represent a very large share of the money spent through credit cards.

42.7%Credit-card value in interest-free installments in Q3 2025.
R$381.2BValue of interest-free installment transactions in that quarter.
64.5%Installment volume in two to six payments.
33.6%Volume in seven to twelve; only 1.9% exceeded twelve.

Abecs reported that interest-free installments represented 42.7% of credit-card transaction value in the third quarter of 2025. Central Bank data for 2023 had already shown why installments matter: they were about 13% of credit-card transaction count but approximately 48% of transaction value, which connects them disproportionately to larger purchases.

The word parcelar covers several systems

Five situations foreigners should not confuse

Situation Portuguese Chosen when Usual cost Key distinction
Merchant installment purchase parcelado pelo lojista / sem juros At checkout No separate interest stated to the buyer The store divides the purchase
Issuer-financed purchase parcelado com juros At checkout Interest and total cost apply The issuer finances the purchase
Statement installment plan parcelamento da fatura After the statement closes Interest and charges apply The unpaid statement becomes a new credit operation
Revolving credit crédito rotativo When the statement is not paid in full under the applicable rules Interest applies It is not the original store installment
Store credit crediário / carnê Through the retailer or finance partner Can be interest-free or interest-bearing Historically important for durable goods

Chosen before authorization

How does a store installment work?

  1. The store defines the plans. A product may allow one charge, 6x without interest, 10x without interest, or a longer plan with interest.
  2. The customer chooses the number of installments. The cashier enters the plan before the card transaction is confirmed.
  3. The issuer authorizes the purchase. Approval depends on available limit and issuer controls.
  4. One installment reaches each future statement. The cardholder still needs to pay every statement normally.
  5. The merchant receives under its commercial arrangement. Settlement and receivables anticipation are separate from the customer’s schedule.

The monthly charge and available limit are different numbers

Does only the first installment use the credit limit?

Commonly, no. CAIXA and federal financial-education guidance explain that the total purchase amount consumes the card limit even when the purchase is divided.

Limit before purchase

Available limit: R$5,000.

Purchase authorization

A R$3,000 purchase in 10x may reduce available limit to about R$2,000.

Monthly statement

Only R$300 reaches each statement under the agreed plan.

Limit restoration

The limit normally returns as payments are recognized, subject to issuer rules.

The consumer’s ten payments do not dictate the merchant’s receipt schedule

Does the store wait ten months to receive?

Not necessarily. Card sales create recebíveis—amounts the merchant has the right to receive under its agreement with the acquirer or sub-acquirer.

The merchant may use antecipação de recebíveis. The Central Bank defines this as receiving earlier the value of sales that would otherwise arrive later. The merchant receives sooner, but the anticipated amount is reduced by interest and administrative costs.

Scheduled settlement

The retailer receives according to its acquiring contract.

Pre-contracted anticipation

Eligible receivables are automatically paid earlier under contracted pricing.

On-demand anticipation

The merchant chooses to advance particular receivables after the sale.

Customer schedule remains

The buyer continues paying the agreed installments even if the merchant receives earlier.

No separate interest does not mean every method has the same price

What does sem juros really mean?

If a product costs R$3,000 and the plan is ten payments of R$300, the installment total remains R$3,000. That is a legitimate sem juros offer to the buyer.

However, the store may offer a lower Pix or cash price. Card acceptance, settlement, and anticipation costs can also exist in the commercial structure.

Choice Amount shown Total What it means
Pix discount R$ 2,850 now R$ 2,850 Lowest total in this example
10x sem juros 10x de R$ 300 R$ 3,000 No separate interest, but R$150 more than Pix
Statement financing Depends on issuer offer R$ 3,000 plus charges Begins only if the statement is financed

Brazilian law permits method-specific pricing

Can a store charge less for Pix and more for credit?

Yes. Law 13,455/2017 authorizes price differentiation by payment term or instrument. The pricing law also requires discounts linked to payment method or term to be displayed visibly.

One price for all methods

The seller may choose the same price for Pix, debit, and card.

Pix or cash discount

The seller may reward immediate receipt with a lower total.

Different plans by term

Up to 3x may be interest-free while 12x carries interest.

Visible conditions

The consumer should be able to identify price, discount, installments, and total.

A system becomes cultural when everyone expects it

Why are installment payments so common?

Monthly cash flow

The buyer asks whether the payment fits several future monthly budgets rather than whether the full price is available today.

Access to durable goods

Store credit and cards allow households to acquire appliances, furniture, electronics, and necessary services before saving the complete price.

High prices relative to income

An ordinary product can still represent several months of income, making timing central to the decision.

Retail competition

A retailer that refuses installments may lose a customer to a competitor offering 10x or 12x.

Preserving liquidity

Even a buyer with savings may prefer to keep cash available for emergencies or other obligations.

Established infrastructure

Cashiers, terminals, issuers, and websites are built to select installments quickly.

Habit and normalization

People grow up seeing prices expressed as monthly payments, so the format feels ordinary.

Emergencies

Dental work, repairs, travel, medicine, and replacement appliances may not wait.

Multiple credit channels

Cards, store credit, carnês, financing, and digital products coexist.

Credit did not begin with the modern card terminal

Carnê and crediário: the older culture behind today’s installments

Before card installments became routine, retailers widely used crediário—store credit—and the carnê, a booklet containing one payment slip for each installment. The Central Bank’s own glossary illustrates the concept with a refrigerator purchased in 36 monthly payments.

Carnê

A booklet or sequence of monthly payment slips.

Crediário

The retailer or finance partner approves a store-credit arrangement.

Prestação

The monthly amount due, still central even when it appears in an app.

Durable goods

Appliances and furniture became emblematic because they were expensive but immediately useful.

The total price and monthly commitment answer different questions

Why Brazilians often think in installments

Total-price question

Is this product worth R$3,000?

Monthly-budget question

Can I absorb R$300 per month for ten months?

The monthly view makes access easier to imagine but can reduce the psychological prominence of the total price. A disciplined buyer restores the hidden information by calculating the total and listing every existing future installment.

One small installment rarely appears alone

The accumulation problem

PhoneR$300/month
Airline ticketR$240/month
Dental treatmentR$180/month
FurnitureR$220/monthR$940 before new spending
  • Future installments reduce flexibility before the month begins.
  • Several cards can hide the complete obligation.
  • A higher limit is not additional income.
  • Six-month and twelve-month purchases can overlap.
  • Paying the full statement prevents interest but not budget pressure.
  • Statement financing can transform manageable purchases into expensive debt.

Not only phones and televisions

What do Brazilians buy in installments?

Abecs data for Q3 2025 shows installments across retail and services.

Sector Up to 6x Over 6x Cultural reading
Books and related retail 55.9% 25.6% Installments are not limited to luxury goods.
Electronics and appliances 25.2% 35.3% Longer plans are especially visible in high-ticket purchases.
Clothing, shoes, and accessories 55.3% 13.1% Short installment plans are routine.
Auto parts 46.4% 22.6% Urgent repairs may be spread across months.
Medical services 42.4% 24.5% Installments also finance necessary services.
Airlines and related services 46.4% 15.6% Travel is commonly matched to monthly cash flow.

A distinctive configuration, not an isolated invention

Is installment buying unique to Brazil?

No. Other countries use financing, store credit, card installments, and buy-now-pay-later products. Brazil stands out through the combination of:

  • merchant-selected installments at ordinary card checkout;
  • 10x and 12x as normal retail options;
  • sem juros as a central sales message;
  • installments across many categories;
  • advertising that highlights the monthly amount;
  • historical continuity with carnê and crediário;
  • prices that can be large relative to monthly income;
  • coexistence with Pix discounts and method-specific prices.

The most important financial distinction

Parcelar a compra is not parcelar a fatura

Parcelar a compra

Chosen at checkout. If every statement is paid in full, no revolving debt is created.

Parcelar a fatura

The statement has already closed and the cardholder finances the unpaid balance with interest and charges.

Crédito rotativo

A balance remains unpaid under the applicable rules and incurs interest.

Interest cap

For qualifying debts from January 3, 2024, interest and charges cannot exceed the original unpaid principal. A R$1,000 debt can still become R$2,000.

Avoid moralizing and romanticizing

Common misconceptions

Brazilians parcel because they do not understand money.

That is a caricature. The same mechanism can support access, liquidity, urgent needs, or unsustainable spending depending on the household.

Sem juros is always the cheapest price.

A store may legally offer a lower Pix or cash price.

Only the first installment uses the limit.

Many issuers commit the full purchase amount and restore limit as payments are processed.

The store always waits ten months.

Settlement follows the merchant contract, and receivables may be anticipated.

Installment purchase and installment statement are the same.

One is selected at checkout; the other finances an unpaid statement and normally carries interest.

A R$300 installment means the product costs R$300.

The total is the installment multiplied by the number of payments.

Installments are unique to Brazil.

Other countries use financing and buy-now-pay-later systems; Brazil is distinctive in frequency, duration, visibility, and integration with card checkout.

Small installments cannot hurt the budget.

Several small obligations can overlap and consume future income before new spending begins.

A practical decision framework

How to evaluate an installment offer

  1. Calculate the total. Multiply the installment by the number of payments.
  2. Compare Pix and upfront prices.
  3. Ask whether there is interest. Use É sem juros?
  4. Check available limit.
  5. List every existing installment.
  6. Protect emergency liquidity.
  7. Do not finance the statement casually.
  8. Read cancellation and refund rules.
  9. For interest-bearing credit, compare total effective cost.

Frequently asked questions

Why are installment payments so common in Brazil?

They combine consumer access, retail competition, monthly budgeting, high-ticket prices relative to income, credit-card infrastructure, and a long history of store credit.

What does 10x sem juros mean?

Ten payments with no separate interest stated under that offer. Multiply the installment by ten and compare the total with the Pix or upfront price.

Does a parcelled purchase use the full card limit?

Commonly, yes. The full amount may reduce available credit even though one installment appears on each statement. Issuer rules vary.

Does the store receive monthly?

It depends on the acquiring contract. The merchant may receive on schedule or anticipate receivables after costs.

Is an installment purchase a debt?

It creates future obligations. Paid normally, it differs from revolving credit or statement financing, but it still commits future income.

What is the difference between parcelar a compra and parcelar a fatura?

The purchase is divided at checkout. The statement is financed after spending has reached the bill, normally with interest.

Can a store charge less for Pix?

Yes. Brazilian law allows price differentiation by payment term or instrument, with visible disclosure.

What is carnê or crediário?

Crediário is store credit. A carnê is the traditional booklet or sequence of payment slips, one for each installment.

Are card-debt charges unlimited?

No. For qualifying debts originating from January 3, 2024, total interest and charges on revolving and statement-installment debt cannot exceed the original principal. That does not make the debt cheap.
