The History of The Movie Club

The Movie Club began over seven years ago when we discovered that students learn Portuguese faster and more effectively through real, authentic contexts. Brazilian cinema, with its rich cultural, historical, and linguistic elements, became the perfect tool for immersive language learning.

Since then, The Movie Club has provided a unique and engaging way to master Portuguese—where each film offers full immersion in the language, culture, and history of Brazil.

Our mission has always been to create a welcoming community where students don’t just learn to speak but truly experience the language. Over the years, we’ve seen firsthand how this method makes learning practical, enjoyable, and effective. And the best part? Our students start speaking Portuguese from day one!

The Movie Club is a group course where you'll practice Portuguese with other learners and Brazilian natives, enriching discussions in a supportive environment. You'll immerse yourself in both the language and culture, discovering what makes Brazil unique.

This is a practical course designed to encourage communication from the very beginning. Whether you’re shy or love to talk, you’ll always be encouraged to communicate and practice Portuguese continuously.

Throughout the sessions, you’ll progress at an accelerated pace. Films provide continuous learning, as you absorb both vocabulary and natural expressions used in everyday conversation, which you’ll immediately apply in the course.

Brazilian cinema is one of the most powerful ways to reflect the country’s reality and diversity. From classic films to contemporary productions, each movie tells a unique story with characters that represent various layers of Brazilian society.

What Does The Course Offer?

Weekly Movie Discussions

Each week, we’ll watch a different Brazilian movie together (or you can watch it beforehand). These films are chosen to showcase the diversity of Brazilian culture, history, and language.

Vocabulary Expansion

Receive a curated vocabulary list with key phrases and expressions used in the movie. Difficult words are explained with examples, helping you incorporate them into your own speech.

Group Discussions

Join guided conversations in small groups via Zoom. You’ll analyze themes, characters, and cultural contexts, practicing your Portuguese in a supportive and interactive environment.

Expert Guidance

Our experienced teachers are there to guide discussions, answer your questions, and ensure you feel confident expressing yourself in Portuguese.

The course is designed for learners of all levels. While discussions are in Portuguese, beginners can participate at their own pace and benefit from the immersive experience.

Can I join if I don’t have much time to study?

Yes! The course is designed to fit different schedules. The live discussions are once a week, and all sessions are recorded. You can also engage with additional materials at your own pace.

Do you provide the movies?

No, we do not provide the movies. However, we always indicate where they are available on streaming platforms or where they can be purchased or rented legally, in accordance with copyright laws.

Where do the classes take place?

All classes are online via Zoom, so you can join from anywhere in the world.

 

What if I miss a class?

All live sessions are recorded, so you can watch them later at your convenience.
