The Movie Club
Brazilian Portuguese through cinema, culture and real conversation.
The program that started The Brazilian Ways is returning in a new format. Explore four independent Brazilian films through guided materials, cultural context and live small-group conversations with Brazilian speakers.
Free to join. No payment and no commitment to enroll.
More than pressing play
Watching a movie is not the method. What happens around it is.
A Brazilian film already gives you images, voices, subtitles, emotions and real situations. The Movie Club adds the guidance that helps you notice the language, understand the context and turn what you watched into communication.
Language before the film
Meet the characters, essential vocabulary, cultural background and expressions that will help you enter the story with more confidence.
Active watching, at your level
Watch with English subtitles, Portuguese subtitles or no subtitles. Use visual context, repeated scenes and a guided watch plan that fits your Portuguese.
Conversation after the film
Use the story to describe, react, disagree, defend characters, compare cultures and communicate with other learners and Brazilian speakers.
Where The Brazilian Ways began
Before The Brazilian Ways, there was Portuguese with Movies.
The Movie Club is not a new idea added to our catalog. Teaching Portuguese through Brazilian films was the original foundation of our school. For years, we created film guides, podcasts, vocabulary lessons, cultural materials and live discussions around Brazilian cinema.
The new version brings that accumulated experience back in a clearer, more interactive and more flexible format for today’s international community.
One film. One complete cycle.
Every film follows the same clear path.
The films are independent. What remains consistent is the learning experience around each one, making every cycle easy to understand and every future season easy to repeat.
Prepare
Build the cultural and linguistic context you need before the story begins.
Watch
Watch at your pace, with the subtitles and level of support that work for you.
Explore
Go deeper through scenes, vocabulary, podcasts, cultural notes and guided activities.
Meet and communicate
Use the film in a live session designed for speaking, reacting and interacting.
The same film. Different ways in.
You do not need to understand every word to learn from a Brazilian film.
Film combines image, sound, subtitles, action and emotion. That makes it useful at different stages of Portuguese—provided the guidance and expectations change with the learner.
Beginners use the story as context
Watch with English subtitles, recognize recurring words, connect language to actions and participate through accessible questions and supported activities.
Intermediate learners build comprehension
Explore expressions, summarize scenes, describe characters and use the film to speak more freely about events, choices and relationships.
Advanced learners analyze language and culture
Work with natural speech, accents, irony, subtext and complex cultural discussions while refining argumentation and precision.
Live only when live matters
The live sessions are not lectures you could have watched later.
Explanations, introductions and tutorials belong in the platform. Live time is reserved for the things that depend on other people: listening, responding, negotiating meaning, receiving feedback and building a conversation together.
Small groups change the quality of the conversation.
The Movie Club is not designed as a crowded webinar. During guided practice, the goal is to have approximately one Brazilian speaker for every two or three students, creating more speaking time, closer interaction and less pressure to compete for attention.
Inside each season
A structured course built around four films—not four isolated movie nights.
The final films and schedule will be announced before enrollment. These are the core elements being planned for every new Movie Club season.
Help shape the launch
The priority list will decide what we actually open.
Your answers will help us identify real combinations of time zones, days, class times, Portuguese levels, preferred pace and film interests—so we can open the right number of small groups instead of guessing.
Frequently asked questions
What is confirmed—and what the priority list will help decide.
The first new season is still being planned. These answers separate the fixed core of the program from the details that will be selected with the community.
Is enrollment open now?
No. We are currently building the priority list and validating the best schedules and pace. People on the list will receive the films, dates, times and enrollment details before the public launch.
How long will the first new season last?
The fixed structure is four independent films and four live experiences. The priority-list responses will help us decide whether the first season runs across four consecutive weeks or gives students two weeks for each film.
Are the four films connected to one another?
Not necessarily. Each film is an independent learning experience. The selection may include similar genres or themes when possible, but availability, subtitles, legal access and the quality of the learning experience come first.
Can complete beginners participate?
Yes. Beginners can watch with English subtitles, use visual context and focus on essential vocabulary and supported activities. More experienced learners can work with Portuguese subtitles, natural speech, accents, subtext and deeper discussion.
Do you provide the films?
No. We provide guidance on legal streaming, purchase or rental options available for the selected films. The cost of watching or renting the films is not included in the course price.
What happens in the live sessions?
Live time is reserved for interactive work: guided discussion, breakout-room tasks, scene activities, roleplay, cultural comparison, real-time feedback and conversation with Brazilian speakers. Explanations that do not require interaction are delivered asynchronously.
How much will the course cost?
The planned regular price is US$277. People on the priority list will receive early access to the US$247 launch price. A two-payment option will also be available when enrollment opens.
Does joining the list commit me to enrolling?
No. Joining is free and does not require payment or create any obligation to purchase. Your answers help us plan the launch, and you decide whether to enroll after receiving the final details.
Four films can show you far more than four stories.
Join the priority list, help shape the first new Movie Club season and receive early access to the US$247 launch offer.
