Improve your Portuguese while exploring Acabou Chorare, one of the most celebrated albums in Brazilian music.

Created by Novos Baianos and released in 1972, the album blends samba, rock, choro, frevo, and other Brazilian musical influences. Its songs offer a rich way to explore Brazilian language, creativity, cultural references, and different ways of seeing life.

This is not a traditional music lecture. It is a two-hour cultural and conversational immersion in Portuguese, created for students who want to understand Brazil beyond grammar exercises and textbooks.

How the Class Works

Before the class, each student will receive one or more assigned songs from the album.

You will be encouraged to:

• listen carefully to your assigned song;

• read and explore the lyrics;

• identify useful expressions and unfamiliar vocabulary;

• reflect on the song’s message and themes;

• prepare a few personal comments to share in Portuguese.

You may create a short presentation or simply bring handwritten notes in your own words. There is no fixed format, and your analysis does not need to be academic or perfect.

The objective is to listen, reflect, and communicate naturally in Portuguese.

What We’ll Explore Together

During the live session, we will:

• learn about Novos Baianos and the cultural context of the album;

• listen to selected parts of the songs;

• discuss lyrics, idiomatic expressions, and cultural references;

• explore the messages and stories behind the music;

• share personal interpretations and opinions;

• practice listening and speaking with four Brazilian speakers participating in the class.

You will also hear your classmates’ perspectives, which makes the experience richer and creates opportunities for spontaneous conversation.

Who This Experience Is For

This cultural class is especially valuable for Portuguese students who want to:

• improve their ability to understand spoken and sung Portuguese;

• speak more confidently about music, culture, and personal opinions;

• learn expressions in context;

• develop a deeper understanding of Brazilian culture;

Students at different levels can participate. More advanced students will be able to analyze the language and themes in greater depth, while less experienced students can focus on listening, vocabulary, and sharing simpler opinions.

Preparation is strongly recommended, but it is not mandatory. Even if you are unable to prepare in advance, you can still join the class, listen to the discussions, and participate according to your level.
