About Ultraje a Rigor

Ultraje a Rigor is one of the most iconic Brazilian rock bands of the 1980s. With humorous and ironic lyrics, they brought unforgettable hits like “Ciúme,” “Nós Vamos Invadir Sua Praia” and “Inútil” to radios, parties, and even school festivals across the country. Their playful yet sharp style made them a voice for a generation — especially during moments of political change like the Diretas Já movement.

In fact, their song “Inútil” almost didn’t make it to the public. It was initially censored under Brazil’s military dictatorship for being “pessimistic” and “disrespectful to the system.” The lyrics, which criticized the political situation and lack of freedom, were even accused of being communist propaganda. But the band — and their label — fought back and got the song released. It would go on to become an anthem of rebellion and cultural identity.

Their influence goes far beyond their discography. Drummer Aquiles Priester once said he and his friends were so inspired by Ultraje that they formed a cover band called Ultraje a Rigor Júnior, performing at school events and making their own instruments from cardboard and plywood!
