I have tried apps (Duolingo, Babbel, etc) and tried reading grammar books just to be either frustrated, unmotivated or only learning words and not how to structure sentences and phrases. Upon taking the course, doing the work and going back over the recordings of class and ordering Camila’s book from Amazon, I not only started to understand the structure, but with her and the other Brazilian instructors you get a true sense of the language. I am married to a Brazilian and actually live in Brazil, with all the Portuguese speakers around me, I still did not understand or feel like I was learning the language until I took Brazilian Ways course. As a relative beginner (only knowing basic phrases from 5 months in Brasil, but with no formal lessons) the 5 month course was the perfect introduction to learning a language in my opinion. It blends structured learning with natural conversation really well. We normally spend just the right amount of time on grammar at the start of each class , before breakout rooms where we can practice applying the grammar principles in real life scenarios which is really useful - and the smaller size of the breakout rooms makes it very comfortable to ask any questions. With other language classes Ive done in french the teacher can spend too much time on grammar leading to the class becoming very tiring. The biggest thing for me is that we're given a freedom and confidence to speak, even if we dont get everything perfect first time, this really improved my ability to communicate with Brasileiros instead of getting stuck on tiny details. My favourite thing about the course is definitely the Brazilian Way's 'community feel'. The atmosphere is really good to learn in, we cover fun topics like iconic Brazilian movies and music, and having the two whatsapp groups as a resource to learn more about Brazilian culture from Brazilians , share stories, and see other Gringo's experiences learning or living in Brasil is really cool!
